Srila Prabupada singing Hare Krishna Kirtan

Sri Govinda Damodar Stuti

This song was composed by Sri Bilvamangala Thakur.

1) Kararavinde na padaravindam

Mukharavinde viniveshayantam
Vatasya patrasya pute shayanam
Balam Mukundam manasa smarami

I remember the infant Mukunda, Who sleeps inside a hollow Banyan leaf and Who by His lotus-hands, is putting His lotus-feet in His lotus-mouth.

2) shrI kRiShNa govinda hare murAre
he nAtha nArAyaNa vAsudeva
jihve pibasvAmRitam etad eva
govinda dAmodara mAdhaveti

"Shri Krishna! Govinda! Hari! Murari! O Lord, Narayana, Vasudeva!" O tongue, please drink only this nectar--"Govinda, Damodara, Madhava!"

3) vikretukAmA kila gopa-kanyA
murAri-pAdArpita-citta-vRittiH
dadhyAdikaM mohavashAd avocad
govinda dAmodara mAdhaveti

Though desiring to sell milk, dahi, butter, etc., the mind of a young gopi was so absorbed in the lotus feet of Krishna that instead of calling out "Milk for sale," she bewilderedly said, "Govinda!", Damodara!", and "Madhava!"

4) gRihe gRihe gopa-vadhU-kadambAH
sarve militvA samavAya-yoge
puNyAni nAmAni paThanti nityaM
govinda dAmodara mAdhaveti

In house after house, groups of cowherd ladies gather on various occasions, and together they always chant the transcendental names of Krishna--"Govinda, Damodara, and Madhava."

5) sukhaM shayAnA nilaye nije 'pi
nAmAni viShNoH pravadanti martyAH
te nishcitaM tanmayatAM vrajanti
govinda dAmodara mAdhaveti

Even the ordinary mortals comfortably seated at home who chant the names of Vishnu, "Govinda, Damodara," and "Madhava," certainly attain (at least) the liberation of having a form similar to that of the Lord.

6) jihve sadaiva bhaja sundarANi
nAmAni kRiShNasya manoharANi
samasta-bhaktArti-vinAshanAni
govinda dAmodara mAdhaveti

O my tongue, just always worship these beautiful, enchanting names of Krishna, "Govinda, Damodara," and "Madhava," which destroy all the obstacles of the devotees.

7) sukhAvasAne tv idam eva sAraM
duHkhAvasAne tv idam eva geyam
dehAvasAne tv idam eva jApyaM
govinda dAmodara mAdhaveti

This indeed is the essence (found) upon ceasing the affairs of mundane happiness. And this too is to be sung after the cessation of all sufferings. This alone is to be chanted at the time of death of one's material body--"Govinda, Damodara, Madhava!"

8) shrI kRiShNa rAdhAvara gokulesha
gopAla govardhana-nAtha viShNo
jihve pibasvAmRitam etad eva
govinda dAmodara mAdhaveti

O tongue, drink only this nectar (of the names), "Shri Krishna, dearmost of Shrimati Radharani, Lord of Gokula, Gopala, Lord of Govardhana, Vishnu, Govinda, Damodara," and "Madhava."

9) jihve rasajJe madhura-priyA tvaM
satyaM hitaM tvAM paramaM vadAmi
AvarNayethA madhurAkAarANi
govinda dAmodara mAdhaveti

O my tongue, you are fond of sweet things and are of discriminating taste; I tell you the highest truth, which is also the most beneficial. Please just recite these sweet syllables: "Govinda," "Damodara," and "Madhava."

10) tvAm eva yAce mama dehi jihve
samAgate daNDa-dhare kRitAnte
vaktavyam evaM madhuraM su-bhaktyA
govinda dAmodara mAdhaveti

O my tongue, I ask only this of you, that at my meeting the bearer of the sceptre of chastisement (Yamaraja), you will utter this sweet phrase with great devotion: "Govinda, Damodara, Madhava!"

11) shrInAtha vishveshvara vishva-mUrte
shrI devakI-nandana daitya-shatro
jihve pibasvAmRitam etad eva
govinda dAmodara mAdhaveti

"Shrinatha, Lord of the universe, form of the universe, beautiful son of Devaki, O enemy of the demons, Govinda, Damodara, Madhava!" O my tongue, just drink this nectar.

12) gopIpate kaMsa-ripo mukunda
lakShmIpate keshava vAsudeva
jihve pibasvAmRitam etad eva
govinda dAmodara mAdhaveti

"Lord of the gopis, enemy of Kamsa, Mukunda, husband of Lakshmidevi, Keshava, son of Vasudeva, Govinda, Damodara, Madhava!" O my tongue, just drink this nectar.

Translation

Though I can’t see Thou,
Thou art my sight,
Thou art my light
O Lord of the Seven Hills,
Protector of the mortal beings,
I know Thou art here for me,
What else do I need?

Thou standeth veiled by a curtain
To be seen only by the Vedic scholars
But why should I be worried
I’m not a scholar,
Yet I don’t have any regrets.
No shortcomings do I have.

On this hill
Thou art a crowning glory
O boon-giver,
O Unsurmountable Lord
No regrets do I have.

In this Kaliyuga,
Thou hast entered the stone in the sanctum
And though I see Thee naught,
No worries for me.

O symbol of strength,
With the Ocean of love and compassion,
Who breathes in Thy heart,
Who is like My Mother,
And gives me anything I ask for;
With the two of You beside me
Can I have any regrets?
No woes do I have,
No regrets.

Damodarashtakam

"In the month of Kartika one should worship Lord Krishna by daily reciting the prayer spoken by sage Satyavrata Muni known as Damodarashtakam."
- Hari-bhakti-vilasa 2.16.198

Text One
namamisvaram sac-cid-ananda-rupam
lasat-kundalam gokule bhrajamanam
yashoda-bhiyolukalad-dhavamanam
paramrstam atyam tato drutya gopya

Translation
"To the supreme controller, who possesses an eternal form of blissful knowledge, whose glistening earrings swing to and fro, who manifest Himself in Gokula, who stole the butter that the gopis kept hanging from the rafters of their storerooms and who then quickly jumped up and ran in retreat in fear of Mother Yashoda but was ultimately caught - to that Supreme Lord, Sri Damodara, I offer my humble obeisances."

Text Two

rudantam muhur netra-yugmam mrjantam
karambhoja-yugmena satanka-netram
muhuh svasa-kampa-tri-rekhanka-kantha-
sthita-graiva damodaram bhakti-baddham

Translation
"Upon seeing His mother's whipping stick, He cried and rubbed His eyes again and again with His two lotus hands. His eyes were fearful and His breathing quick, and as Mother Yashoda bound His belly with ropes, He shivered in fright and His pearl necklace shook. To this Supreme Lord, Sri Damodara, I offer my humble obeisances."

Text Three

itidrk sva-lilabhir ananda-kunde
sva-ghosam nimajjantam akhyapayantam
tadiyesita-jnesu bhaktair jitatvam
punah prematas tam satavrtti vande

Translation
"Those superexcellent pastimes of Lord Krishna's babyhood drowned the inhabitants of Gokula in pools of ecstasy. To the devotees who are attracted only to His majestic aspect of Narayana in Vaikuntha, the Lord herein reveals: "I am conquered and overwhelmed by pure loving devotion." To the Supreme Lord, Damodara, my obeisances hundreds and hundreds of times."

Text Four

varam deva! moksham na mokshavadhim va
na canyam vrne 'ham varesad apiha
idam te vapur natha! gopala-balam
sada me manasy avirastam kim anyaih

Translation
" O Lord, although You are able to give all kinds of benedictions, I do not pray to You for liberation, nor eternal life in Vaikuntha, nor any other boon. My only prayer is that Your childhood pastimes may constantly appear in my mind. O Lord, I do not even want to know your feature of Paramatma. I simply wish that Your childhood pastimes may ever be enacted in my heart."

Text Five

idam te mukhambhojam avyakta-nilair
vrtam kuntalaih nigdha-raktais ca gopya
muhus cumbitam bimba-raktadharam me
manasy avirastam alam laksa-labhaih

Translation
" O Lord, the cheeks of Your blackish lotus face, which is encircled by locks of curling hair, have become reddened like bimba fruits due to Mother Yashoda's kisses. What more can I describe than this? Millions of opulences are of no use to me, but may this vision constantly remain in my mind."

Text Six

namo deva! damodarananta! visno!
prasida prabho! duhkha-jalabdhi-magnam
krpa-drsti-vrstyati-dinam batanu-
grhanesa! mam ajnam edhy aksi-drsyah

Translation
"O unlimited Vishnu! O master! O Lord! Be pleased upon me! I am drowning in an ocean of sorrow and am almost like a dead man. Please shower the rain of mercy on me; uplift me and protect me with Your nectarean vision."

Text Seven

kuveratmajau baddha-murtyaiva yad-vat
tvaya mocitau bhakti-bhajau krtau ca
tatha prema-bhaktim svakam me prayaccha
na mokshe graho me 'sti damodareha

Text Eight

namas te 'stu damne sphurad dipti-dhamne
tvadiyodarayatha vishvasya dhamne
namo radhikayai tvadiya priyayai
namo 'nanta-lilaya devaya tubhyam

Translation
"O Lord, the entire universe was created by Lord Brahma, who was born from Your abdomen, which was bound by a rope by Mother Yashoda. To this rope I offer my humble obeisances. I offer my obeisances to Your most beloved Srimati Radharani and to Your unlimited pastimes."
